A Range Rover driver who damaged 11 neighbours' cars in a drunken attempt at late-night parking was banned from the road for three years yesterday and given a two-year community rehabilitation order.

Leslie Arliss, 39, will have to attend a drink-impaired driver's course and sessions on anger management as well as paying £1,000 in compensation and costs.

Bradford magistrates heard he was three times over the legal alcohol limit when he caused £150,000 worth of mayhem in the narrow back street in Queensbury, on the edge of the city, where he lives. Neighbours' cars were shunted, crushed and in one case flipped over, in what the chairwoman of the bench, Alice Brett, described as "a disaster".

Arliss, who sat in court with his head bowed, first reversed into one line of cars and then shifted gear, shot forward and concertinaed another row.

Magistrates heard earlier that there had been disputes over parking in the street, but Arliss's solicitor, Riyaz Shaikh, said: "This was not a case of road or neighbour rage. My client accepts he was over the prescribed limit, he got into the vehicle and what happened next was a mere accident.

"He had gone to his vehicle to take an audio cassette. He leaned over to take it out, hit the reverse stick, panicked and hit it into drive to get it out of reverse. His foot then got trapped under the accelerator."

Arliss was found to have 105 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath when tested at the police station. The maximum permitted level is 35 micrograms.

Mr Shaikh apologised to neighbours on behalf of Arliss, but added that some of the wrecked cars were uninsured and without MoT certificates - "they were in effect dumped vehicles".

One of Arliss's neighbours was arrested by Bradford police yesterday on suspicion of harassment.
