St Pancras blaze causes transport chaos

Road closures and travel disruptions after fire breaks out at London hotel.

A fire in a hotel above St Pancras train station in central London has led to road closures and transport disruptions.

The London fire brigade was called to a small fire in the Midland Grand Hotel on Euston Road at midday. It was under control by 1.15pm.

A fire brigade spokesman said the five-floor hotel had been undergoing renovations when the blaze broke out on the ground floor. Eight fire engines and 45 firefighters attended the scene.

The blaze broke out close to several gas canisters, prompting the evacuation of the British Library and Camden Town Hall.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said there were no reports of anyone trapped inside the building or of any injuries, but the fire had disrupted transport services in the area.

Euston Road was closed between Tottenham Court Road and Hampstead Road, and trains coming in and out of St Pancras had been affected, he said.

Tube trains were also not stopping at King's Cross.

"It is a relatively big incident. It means it is going to cause problems for trains and road traffic in a very busy area."

A spokesman for the hotel said it was not open when the fire broke out. The hotel is undergoing extensive renovations and is due to reopen in 2009.
