German tyre maker Continental AG said yesterday that its automotive systems division would be moving production of high volume brake calipers from its plant in Ebbw Vale to low cost locations in eastern Europe by the end of next year. The decision will mean the loss of 420 jobs at the Welsh plant. Continental said it would invest £2.5m in its specialist small production business, which employs 120 people at Ebbw Vale. The Amicus union said the jobs would go to Slovakia and claimed the decision was another example of companies taking advantage of weak British labour laws.
