Key points of the transport plan

Following a review of its road-building programme in 1998, the government announced 23 studies to examine key transport problem areas, consider all solutions and recommend the most appropriate. The transport secretary's announcement today is based on their findings.

The main proposals
· London to the south-west and south Wales: widening A303 and A30 through two areas of outstanding natural beauty. Mr Darling must decide whether or not to approve widening parts of the A303/A30, effectively creating a second strategic route to the south-west. The West Wiltshire Downs & Cranborne Chase and the Blackdown Hills could be significantly damaged.

· West Midlands to the north-west: widening of 50 miles of the M6. The study recommended widening the M6 between Junction 11 (north of Birmingham) and Junction 20 (south of Warrington) to four lanes and an upgrade of Junction 20. The estimated cost would be £700m.

· North-south movements: widening 54 miles of the M1 in the east midlands. The study recommended widening the M1 between Junction 21 near Leicester and Junction 30 north of Chesterfield, and major upgrades of four junctions.

· A453 Nottingham - M1 Junction 24: the study recommended the widening of the A453 to four lanes through Clifton.

· A1 North of Newcastle: a new dual carriageway between Morpeth and Felton. This would complete the dual carriageway between Newcastle and Alnwick at a cost of about £80m.
