'Swinging' comic dies

The comedian Norman Vaughan has died at 79, having been knocked over crossing the road last month. He achieved fame in 1962 as compere of TV's Sunday Night at the London Palladium, with his catchwords "swinging" and "dodgy".

Eighth death after house fire

An eighth member of an Asian family, Zaib-u-Nisi, 54, has died from her injuries in the fire last week at a house in Birkby, Huddersfield.

Koreans hold football fan

An England and Derby County football fan, Andrew Cooper, 38, was detained on arrival in Seoul yesterday, to be put on the next plane home. Korean police had been told of his 1999 conviction for possessing CS gas, and he had been warned it would be pointless to try to attend the World Cup.

Brixton road rage shooting

A motorist aged 26 was last night in hospital after being shot in the armpit during a "road rage" incident in Brixton, south London, Scotland Yard said. A man and a woman were arrested, and a second man was being sought.

Five tickets win in national lotto

Five ticket holders became millionaires on Saturday as Camelot launched the renamed national lotto. Four shared the £8.5m jackpot, and one won £4m in one of three bonus draws. The winning numbers in the main draw were 21, 22, 30, 31, 38 and 48; bonus ball 13. The winning numbers in the three bonus draws were 15, 26, 29, 40, 44 and 48; 4, 5, 33, 37, 42 and 46; 6, 16, 22, 25, 29 and 48. There were three thunderball winners with the numbers 1, 8, 13, 18, 29 and thunderball 9. There was no lotto extra winner.
